Brodick Ferry Terminal is the main gateway to the Isle of Arran, linking the island to the mainland by ferry to Ardrossan Harbour. The majority of the old harbour facility was constructed in the early 1970s and whilst upgrade and maintenance work had been carried out over the years, the infrastructure had reached the end of its serviceable life. The new harbour upgrade project is the largest of its type to be undertaken by Caledonian Marine Assets Ltd (CMAL), with a combined total investment of circa £30 million (assisted by funding partners, Transport Scotland, SPT, North Ayrshire Council and the Coastal Communities Fund) to deliver a fit-for-the-future ferry service.

PROJECT SCOPE

The team was delighted to be appointed by the main contractor to complete the mechanical, electrical, public health and data installations for this important infrastructure investment, which would provide significant economic benefit to Arran’s tourism and commercial industries.

Servest Arthur McKay’s commitment to energy savings is as much a part of the company’s core values and operational practices as it is an integral part of the energy management system (ISO50001). This meant the team was ideally placed to help achieve a low carbon building, one that makes a significant investment in renewable energy.

SUSTAINABILITY

A firm commitment to sustainability, throughout design and construction, was integral to the project delivery. The team installed a large (20.79kWp) solar PV array to the roof and a 195kW biomass boiler, so the primary sources of electricity and heating were renewable. Other energy saving measures included high-efficiency lighting, heat recovery and natural ventilation which, combined with renewables, led to a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. Extensive sub-metering for monitoring ongoing energy-efficiency was also installed.

“I was really impressed with Servest Arthur McKay’s ‘can-do’ attitude and professionalism. Their installation team have the necessary skills and project management experience, which were pivotal to the successful fit-out of this new transport hub, enhancing vital ferry services between the island of Arran and mainland Scotland.”
