The sunshine draws us all outside, but while you want to get out, lots of pests are looking to get into your home. Our experts have compiled five top tips to help you keep your home pest-free this summer.
1. Use your garden
Your garden is the perfect place to spend summer days, but it can also help you deter pests using very traditional and natural methods. Simple things such are regularly cutting your grass can reduce the places for pests to hide and if you have fruit trees clean up any fallen fruit, regularly removing any rotting fruit that would attract pests.
Another great way to deter pests naturally is some strategically placed pungent plants. The best thing about this is that it is completely natural and can help your garden look beautiful. Petunias, marigolds, lavender and geraniums will help bring colour to your garden, and lemongrass, mint and rosemary can also help bring flavour to your cooking and drinks. The best thing is all these double as pest deterrents.
Attracting and supporting birds will also help. Putting up a birdhouse and using seeds and suet cakes in a feeder can entice birds to your garden, and as natural predators, it can be a great way to keep pests down.
2. Clean up any food waste
Pests, like you and I, have three basic needs; food, water and shelter. Food debris is a magnet for all sort of pests; this could be leftovers from a barbeque or leftover crumbs in your kitchen. To reduce the chance of an infestation, make sure you seal any food away properly and wipe down any surfaces after eating or preparing food on them.
Make sure to regularly empty your bins and keep them clean, also make sure the bin lid is on securely. Make sure you don’t forget about your bins outside as well, including wheelie bins and compost bins, making sure they are secure can be vital in stopping possible infestations.
3. Fix any cracks
A crack or crevice is like an open door to a pest. Make sure to check around any windows, doors or pipes for entry points, think about where food may be stored or where it may be damp and check these as well. For example, a sink is a perfect place for a pest to hide under. By sealing these cracks, you can keep any unwanted critters out of your house.
4. Remove stagnant water
Stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for insects, especially mosquitos. Make sure to check for blocked gutters and drains and free them up. It is also a good idea to install a pump or fountain to any ponds to make sure that the water is moving and clean.
5. Ask the professionals
Always feel comfortable to ask for advice, not everything can be done yourself at home with retail products. The worst thing you can do with a pest infestation is to leave it and hope it goes away. Sometimes the best thing is to call a professional and get it sorted.
